2018-08-06 Day 8 –Explore Red Bay, Pinware, and West Saint Modeste


Had a great night’s sleep, super quiet and nice and dark. The trouble with a tent – is you see all the outside light – so I liked that. Even when the sun woke me around 6AM, I just rolled over and snoozed for a while. Nice lazy start to the day. Cooked a nice breakfast, drank a pot of coffee, cleaned up (yea – nice clean showers – I like that a lot), and then off to explore.

Drove back the 10- 15 km to Red Bay for a look around. Saw a sign for a walking trail up “Tracey Hill” – and off I went. Wow – a bit of a “stairmaster” routine. The trail is a very nice boardwalk about 1.5 km long – and I have no idea how much you climb – but it is mostly stairs and it is a long climb. I was foggy over the ocean – so the views were good – but I bet they are spectacular on a clear day.

After the walk, I drove around the town and spotted a little restaurant called “Whale Watch” (or something like that. Wow – best fish and chips in a long time. I think the cod was still swimming yesterday – and both the wish and the chips were cooked perfectly.

Back down to Pinware, and had a look around that town. A couple of nice ocean views, but nothing spectacular to report.

Then, I drove over to West Saint Modeste. Got a nice view of the old lighthouse that I can see from my campsite. Drove just past town – and found another walking trail. The signs indicate you can follow that trail all the way down to Blanc-Sablon – where the ferry is – about 50km I think. Needless to say, I did not do all of it! I did walk down it about 0.5 km and got another really nice ocean view.

So, I turned and headed back to the campsite. Stopped at a store and got beer and ice – and here I sit. A really nice relaxing day. With the setup and tear-down of a campsite – I really do like having a day off every couple of days.

Weather last night and today has been good. Forecast for tonight is also good – so that will make packing up in the morning easy. The forecast for my time on the island is still not looking good – but hey – the forecast for today sucked – and it has been good – so maybe I will catch a break.

2018-08-09 & 10 Day 11 & 12 - Climb Gros Morne, Tour the SW Coast

So, yesterday morning (Day 11) dawned as a blue sky day - and I decided I would try the Gros Morne Climb. The sign said 4km to where the loop starts, and the total hike is 16 km. Well according to my Google Fit phone and watch - it is 24 km. Yikes. Plus - after the 4km - about the next 3 km is a very steep scramble up a gully full of broken stone. My light duty hiking / running shoes are really not sturdy enough. At the top - the sign says you are at 806 m - which sounds about right - I think 650 of those are the scramble up the gully! The trails loops around the top and and then down the back. And a ton of it - maybe 45% is on this broken scramble - so hard work. As I sit here waiting for the ferry 24 hours later - my feet and hips are still sore. The views were just spectacular - it is worth the work - but if you had asked me that yesterday - I would have spit on your shoe - assuming I could work up the moisture to spit. 2018-08-05 Day 7 – Lots of Gravel –Nice Day – Made it to Pinware River Provincial Park

Up and at it early this morning. I really liked the hotel – but back to the real world – camping – hopefully for the rest of the trip! From Happy Valley, you head back west about 7-8 km on the 500 – and then you head south and east on the 510. Nice road –for about 80 km. Then – you hit 350 km of gravel – all the way to Mary’s Harbour . There is one 2 km stretch of brand new pavement at Port Hope Simpson – for the 2 km just as you get to the bridge – and you think “All right!” But – nope – back on to the gravel for another ~100km. Remember me telling you about all the mud from the gravel in Quebec on the 389? Well – today it  was dust. Man oh man –tons of dust. I got really lucky as far as not following a dust cloud – did not have to all the way to Port Hope Simpson. I did not catch up to anybody – and the couple of folks who passed me were really moving along – so I just backed off on the gas and let them get well ahead and then went back to my 80 kph cruse. Day 1 - To Kingson, Day 2 - To Quebec City

Arrg - paid extra for a campground that had internet. But - the bandwidth seems low - having trouble uploading photos. Ok - I think I figured it out. All photos will be in 2018 Labrador Trip . Let me know if that link does not work. Yesterday was a short day - drove to Kingston and visited friends and family there. It is worth pointing out - my car is full! After a short Visit with Kim's Mom and Dad (they are both fine - health was as expected for Dad who is in a home where he can get the care he needs), off to see my friends Mike and Marg! Shit -just realized - I forgot to take a photo. They are both doing well, we drank two bottle of wine, ate too much and had a really pleasant evening! Marg - taking Hw 30 south of Montreal was a great idea! One $2.80 toll for the bridge over what I think is the St Lawrence Seaway - or maybe some other canal - and then a clear sail - best transit of Montreal - traffic free - ever!
